Happy Holidays from Hawaii!

                                                                 Mele Kalikimaka!

Still on break - enjoying (a partially working) vacation on the Big Island with family :)

Spending time on the beach, snorkeling, exploring Volcano - home to Pele - and watching the stars at Mauna Kea. Looking forward to a gift of massage tomorrow...

Sending best wishes out to everyone during this holiday season. May ALL beings be happy! <3

___________________________________________________________

We have been eating out more than I expected and I don't have a juicer here :(...but will resume "healthier" eating when I get home. Family and holidays might have something to do with the over-indulgence too :). I did manage to make Vietnamese Crepes one night (delicious!) for everyone and a quick stir fry another night.

We opted for a Mexican themed Christmas meal - I made a really yummy Chile Relleno Casserole. I followed this recipe - http://dishingwithleslie.blogspot.com/2012/08/chili-relleno-casserole.html (I subbed 2 Tbsp Rice flour & 1 Tbsp Corn Starch for the 3 Tbsp Flour to make Gluten Free) - I received compliments from everyone! Thanks Leslie for the inspiration!

Yellow Coconut Curry is next on the menu :)

A couple of places worth mentioning to have pupu's or eat dinner on the island are:

Lava Lava - Waikoloa/Kohala Coast, go during happy hour, sit on chairs/couches in the sand and enjoy pupu's until you watch the sun go down!   http://lavalavabeachclub.com/stay-play/in-the-neighborhood/

LavaLava

Bangkok House (Thai) - on Kuakini Hwy/King Kamehameha Mall in Kailua-Kona. Great Pad Thai!! Tucked away on the 2nd story of building facing the side and rear parking lot with view of hotels closer to Ali'i Drive.

Ahhhh..just home from a wonderfully relaxing Reiki exchange session. I love it when energy work can take you to those nurturing places that you so much need and deserve but life isn't providing them right now in the manifest physical reality. I felt like strong seeds were planted tonight just through the visions and emotions that came through. I am open to receive all the blessings in the universe for me...warm loving community with kindred spirits, warm fires and potlucks with yummy nourishing foods, exchange of deep and meaningful conversation that uplift and inspire. Yurts and hottubs, beaches and forests. Spirit. Music. Welcoming. Comforting. Connecting. Loving. Kindness. Warm Heartfelt Hugs. <3

Good morning! If you haven't heard of Kris Carr and are looking for ways to implement more veggies into your diet and wanting to take a positive, proactive role in your health - visit her website! She has been managing her health with a healthy diet, lifestyle and attitude all while having a form of liver cancer that is inoperable and doesn't respond to chemo (if I'm remembering correctly...). She's great, she's healthy! She reminds me a bit of another Virgo friend in mannerisms, makes me smile. :) She has cookbooks, videos on her story, and cooking classes on her website. http://kriscarr.com/products/crazy-sexy-kitchen-book/. 10/3/12 Daily Food Journal

How do folks deal with their pressures in life? I sometimes wish I had a personal coach that would drop in at just the right time, give me a hug and remind me to breathe, to do a round of EFT, to take a hot bath, or even better - give me a massage, or go for a walk with me somewhere calming. I find when confronted with the challenges I must work through, I have the darnedest time, even with all of my "tools". At the most difficult of times I become overwhelmed, exhausted and at what I feel is the most expanded state of my ability to cope. So why does it always feel so rewarding having passed through it - when it was so arduous along the way? Is it just the absence of struggle that we relish in, and if so, why do we need to struggle in order to feel something better in its absence? I could do without the tension and headaches! How about the presence of ease and flow? Simple. Thank you, more please...

Go Green! Here is my 2nd serving of green juice for the day. Mmm mmm goodness.

It was such a busy day. I'm still working on prioritizing my days better, to be more efficient. Trying to tie up loose ends so I can move forward, clear the clutter--Yipee!

Sat down with my deck of Wisdom For Healing cards by Caroline Myss and pulled, "Expect A Miracle"- Something will come into your life that will serve your healing, so be open to it, and express gratitude when it occurs. Your goal: to know that the world becomes a vessel for the Divine when you see the Divine in all things." So true.

(I recommend Udi's for a decent crust. I buy the thin plain crusts, they come in a two pack. Its 2 personal size pizzas then you add whichever toppings you prefer. It has egg in it so not for everyone.)

Less groggy waking up today, still had some pretty vivid dreams but I remembered it is Full Moon in Aries. Releasing as we begin anew. Luna was shining like a spotlight last night!

The applesauce was a success! Sooo easy to make, see my last post for the recipe I used. I made 12 pints total. Thanks to my friend, Karen, for the inspiration and the connection for apples! Here is a sample:

9/29/12 Daily Food Journal

Today marks the 3rd anniversary of my dear friend and sister, Sharon's, death. She struggled with a 10 month long cancer illness. I love and miss you my friend, be free! Sending love out to her surviving young boys, husband, and family and to all of us that loved her <3

Note-to-self: The vitamin combo before bed gave me intensely vivid dreams and I woke up quite groggy. Seeing as how the Vit C doesn't give me a reaction I will keep that in my mix but going to try some different variations. I'm having symptoms with ovulation that I am wanting to reduce as I move towards my cycle.

I am embarking on my first adventure in canning today  - applesauce. After yesterdays trip to the apple orchard I am well stocked. Wish me luck! Here is the recipe I'm following: http://www.pickyourown.org/applesaucewomill.htm.

9/26/12 Daily Food Summary

Only 5 hours of sleep. I woke up energized in the middle of the night and started studying a friend's Astrology chart, unable to get back to sleep.
Today was overwhelming. I took a leap of faith with a decision and the outcome wasn't what I expected and little twinges of disappointment came up. I ate lots of convenience food and craved really junky food.
As Margaret M Lynch says, "Something really big is on its way to me, something AMAZING, I'll be jumping up and down, I'll be saying, "I can't believe this happened!"

9/18/12 Daily Food Journal

Astrologically speaking, today marks the 2nd (out of 7) squares of Uranus in Aries to Pluto in Capricorn occuring over the next several years. Very emotional week, especially if you have planets or house cusps at 6-8 degrees. Prepare for revolutionary transformation; cathartic breakthroughs; change in structure for the independance of self; liberating power. May it be amazing, clear... with ease and grace! Be kind and nurture yourself instead of partaking in the wackiness. Could also mark a significant time of endings and departures.

I enjoyed a wonderful evening of Reiki sharing between practitioners. "Flexibility" when making decisions came up. Greeted by an incredible golden crescent moon at closing. Lovely way to wrap up the day.... Thank you.

9/12/12 ART

Last night while giving Reiki at our local community clinic I met someone new. She is also a Reiki Master Practitioner as well as Shamanic Practitioner. She said she would be interested in joining our group of Reiki Practitioners in the future. We are thrilled! At the end of the evening she gave me her card and on it lists her website. I looked it up and found she is an artist and facillitates Art Therapy as well as Intuitive/Energy/Shamanic Healing Sessions. This brought me back to my own relationship to art that I want to say something about here.

Art is extremely personal and healing. It can be both relaxing and cathartic. For me it is a place I can turn off that analytical side that seems to get too much "air time" these days. I get into the flow and am off exploring. So I am thankful to have had this reflection to reveal the lop-sidedness of my nurturance lately.

It is such a balance to keep and one that we can forget the importance of until we find ourselves out of balance. We can think of it this way... there are parts that make up a whole and when we focus on lets say just two parts of the whole and not all five then we create imbalance. Even when we fear that not focusing so hard on those two parts (say those are employment and house work) are going to create imbalance (not enough money, messy house, etc) when in reality those other three parts (say  creating art, spending time with friends/family, being in nature/exercising) actually help keep ones WHOLE balance and are just as valuable as the other parts. So I say cheers to WHOLE BALANCE! Body-mind-spirit baby! We weren't born to just pay the bills and clean the house (or whatever your "should" parts are). Happiness is wholeness, so I encourage you to nurture it (I encourage ME too!)

To keep that reminder going I am going to post some pics of mosaic and silk art I have created in the past just to help get those creative juices flowing again...

9/11/12 Daily Food Journal

Sending out prayers and blessings on this day of rememberance for our country.

Today I had some spinal adjustments done at my doctor's. She uses the activator method, a small hand held device used to give chiropractic adjustments to the spine and joints. It is a softer approach than the "crack your back" method. As suspected, my neck was out after months of not having treatment. Thank you!! Alignment feels so good :) She recommends ongoing maintenance in the way of massage and chiropractic adjustments due to the ongoing effects of the accident-- I agree! Pain relief improves performance at work, improves sleep, promotes a better attitude and relations with friends and family. All around good boost for life!

9/7/12 Daily Food Journal

It is so nice to get a full nights sleep and feel good waking up! I started my day with my breathing exercises (I do these daily, btw) and some juice. I love it when I'm not rushed to be anywhere and I can take some time to consciously start my day...as opposed to rolling out of bed and getting on the computer or multitasking to bolt off to a morning board meeting. So I say, "Thank you" for today!

I am a voracious reader of health information and I like nothing more than to read or hear awesome stories from folks. This morning I read a post on Blender Girl's website from a woman that juiced during radiation treatments for breast cancer and ended up feeling great - no low energy - she even lost a healthy amount of weight. It was a combination of juicing, Primal/Paleo diet (LOTS of veggies), and exercise. She has a clean bill of health now.

Cheers to vibrant health! May we all experience it!

Okay...just got a call from my friend whose husband had a kidney stone pass - ouch! I've heard that Chanca Piedra the "stone breaker" can be helpful for this (gallstones too). Anybody with experience care to comment? He also had a mild flare-up of diverticulitis (infection and inflammation of intestinal wall). Turns out when I called my mom to ask her what she does for this, she is having a major flare-up! Stress - be gone! Fiber be eaten. From what I understand the infection usually requires antibiotics, then a clear liquids diet. As a preventative it is all about the fiber - lots of veggies and fruit. Stay away from the nuts and sugar! Cleansing anyone??

9/5/12 Daily Food Journal

Car back in the shop today, hopefully won't need to take it back for awhile. (I've been to the mechanic 4x in the past several weeks). While there I learned of the huge 7.6 mag earthquake in Costa Rica that hit this morning. I have friends and family over there. It sounded really scary but for the most part everyone physically OK. Blessings out to those folks and animals that are still feeling all shook up.

I am so thankful that I gave myself the permission to nurture my body last night. It really helped the day move more smoothly. I also was reminded how I was rear-ended last October, almost a year ago now, and I still have so much tension and soreness held in my body from it. Trauma doesn't heal overnight! I hope to give my body more of this nurturing so I can deeply heal this - its amazing the ripple effect an accident can have on your life. Especially being impacted negatively emotionally too, I still get freaked out when people pull up behind me at stop lights and use turn lanes - I don't trust that they will stop and not hit me. I tense up and become stressed, on and on. I never used to have these thoughts. Gotta gain that trust back, it's no fun! Wish me luck :)

I decided to give my body a break for a couple of days from tea and supplements. I think its good to check in with where things are at and also to not create dependence on anything. Get nutrients through food first!

Onto the food intake...

9/4/12 Daily Food Journal

Oh boy...this is a rough one today. I am feeling so out of it and on the verge of 'SNAP'. I have been trying to figure out how to create an email with graphics for one of the organizations I work for and my brain is struggling...MUST WALK AWAY FROM COMPUTER! This morning I returned home from a 4 day stay in the coastal mountain, it was lovely in the sunshine. Now I'm back at the house and that welcoming scent of mildew mold is here. Blech! Moving into a new house has not been financially an option so I've stayed here with a dehumidifier and air purifier. My intention out into the universe is - to find a clean, healthy home with lots of natural light, big windows, a nice private yard with room for a garden in a nice, mellow neighborhood. I am open to receive all that is good for me!

So upon observing my moods these past few days I'm wondering what could be triggering my flip-of-the-switch angry moods. Not so pleasant both on the giving and receiving end. Is it adding Mag? My sleep hasn't been that great, uncomfortable bed, lots of vivid dreams. Good nights sleep is needed...I may try a break from the Mag also to see if my sleep improves.

I was reminded tonight by my massage therapist of the Blue Moon we just had and its impact on other folks - vivid dreams, sleeplessness. I love it when the collective validates my moods...I'm not alone! I'm also aware that we have some pretty intense astrological shifts taking place. Mars moving through Scorpio, Moon's nodes also in Scorpio and Saturn is transitioning into Scorpio. (If you are new to Astrology there are many worthwhile sites on-line that go more in depth on the subject, I will be brief here). These planets will affect us all in one form or another as they form aspects to our personal planets in our natal astrological chart (Yes, there is more, much more, to Astrology than just your sun sign and daily horoscope in the paper...). Scorpio represents our sense of power, transformation, crisis, abuse, healing, sex, death, rebirth. It is penetrating, probing, investigative by nature, sometimes suspicious and paranoid. You may know a Scorpio or two who likes to provoke or shock others with their discourse on taboo subjects.
Just remember as we go to the depths of our issues that it is the "sh*t" in life that, when composted, turns into beautiful fertile soil (metaphorically speaking). So chin up, do not be afraid to probe the depths just don't get too swept up in revenge, resentment, power struggles, control...obsess if you must but also remember to let go as chronic obsession and power-tripping could really prevent the magical transformation that awaits. Like a caterpiller to a butterfly. Emerge, transform, stand in your true power - Empower!

Ok folks...low blood sugar, funky day...as a last minute revival I scheduled a massage and followed it up with a nice relaxing bath in Epsom Salts, soft music and candle light. It was lovely and just what I needed to feel my center again, a little nurturing can go along way.

Observation #1: Felt dehydrated, not enough water/fluids

8/31/12 Daily Food Journal - Gallstone/Healthy Gallbladder Foods

Tough time getting to sleep last night. Once I did the dreams were vivid and strange. I actually slept in MUCH later than I thought.... So that is what a 1/4 tsp of magnesium feels like at bedtime! It did really help the gallbladder/liver discomfort subside.

Just before bed I read posts from both sides of those who had gotten their gallbladder removed and those who chose diet and lifestyle change while keeping their gallbladder. I saw that many folks had complaints that doctors don't prepare them for the potential side effects after surgery, nor what foods they should eat. No, it doesn't sound like everyone can go back to eating greasy and unhealthy foods as they did before removal. After all, you're removing an organ that stores bile and specifically helps to digest fats, without it bile drips directly into the intestines and on numerous sites I've read this may actually increase the risk of chronic diarrhea or more serious diseases like colon cancer. So as popular as the surgery has become (remember when removing tonsils was popular?) I still feel it needs to be absolutely necessary! The bonus I saw with many folks overall is that they were forced - by their body screaming at them - to eat a healthier diet. Not such a bad mechanism if it actually requires you to live healthier! Who knows, it may prevent some from developing more serious diseases in the future.

I can't help but wonder how the removal of this organ can be seen as the solution. The stones formed in the first place and wouldn't they continue to form if the diet was still the same? People can still get stones in the liver...

Another interesting correlation I've read about is food allergies/sensitivities, low stomach acid, magnesium deficiency and their role in gallbladder health.

Just briefly I will list some of the common do's and dont's with foods I've come across for those having gallbladder/stone issues. These are merely suggestions I've gathered. You are the best at discerning the needs of your body, but these were some things I commonly found- a very alkaline diet (minus meats and grains):

DO Eat:
Beets
Cucumber
Celery
Carrots
Sweet Potato
Asparagus
Artichoke
Zucchini
Green Beans
Fish (salmon, freshwater white fish)
Baby Greens
Chard
Garlic
Ginger
Lemons
Apples (green)
Berries
Pears
Avocado
Parsnip
Radish
Seaweed
Turmeric
Flax Oil/seed
Coconut Oils
Olive Oil
Rice, Millet, Quinoa (my additions)

DON'T Eat:
Heavy fats/deep fried foods
Eggs
Dairy (Milk, cheese, ice cream, sour cream)
Gluten (Wheat, Barley, Rye, etc)
Corn
Poultry
Red Meat
Coffee/Black Tea
Carbonated beverages
Alcohol
Refined/processed sugar
Cabbage family
Nuts
Oranges/Grapefruit

My biggest challenges from this list are: no chicken, corn, or dairy. I've found my body is more sensitive at times than others too. Sometimes I can do dairy and be fine, maybe my gallbladder enjoys processing the fat that day :) Same goes for chicken and corn. There is a balance to be had with fat intake. If I go "no fat" I'm doing myself a diservice. I need to eat some in the form of oil or avocado, at least, otherwise there is discomfort. Personally I've found my gallbladder speaks most when I: a) need to eat, b) have eaten too much at one time, or c) I am under too much stress. My body is the teacher and I try to be a good student (most of the time). We've become so accustomed to convenience and those foods aren't usually the most optimal choices for our bodies. Time to listen and re-learn how to keep the body healthy!
